Not so much a top tip for '99, as more of a full-on dead cert, Skeewiff are seriously teetering on the brink of the big time. Having spent an afternoon filming in the Skeewiff studio, we can guarantee that this definitely ain't no hype. In fact it's no more than they deserve.
See, even if you haven't actually heard of them yet, you'll almost definitely have heard them. By giving the theme tune for Live And Kicking a beat-fuelled injection last year, their refreshingly bouncy break-beats were showcased to a UK audience of millionsàà..although few actually knew it was Skeewiff! Then there were the theme tunes for Sky's Computer Channel and Dani Behr's Full Frontal slot on Kiss FM which again are collectively broadcast to millions......but are either of them likely to be recognised as Skeewiff? Naaah, mate, unfortunately not!!!! So, what's the score? Why the anonimity? They can clearly rock tha house live, for anyone who's seen their awesome gigs at The Ministry or Mass, that's not in question. They've got a slew of damn fine funked up party tunes out - 'Pedigree Cuts', 'Rock Tha House Live' and 'Quattro Stagoini'. They're responsible for three wicked, underground labels - Drop Dead Discs, Danger Trax and Solid Ground which range from deep house to funky breaks. And now they're signed to the innovative and highly acclaimed, FSUK label as artists in their own right - that's Skeewiff to you and me, mate. So where's the recognition they so blatantly deserve? What's goin' on? Are they camera shy or what? Or is this some kinda weird conspiracy!?
Cut to '99 and things are a-changing, and they're changing fast. With a popular live residency in one of the best up-and-coming London clubs, the Brixtonite 'Mass', and their next single, 'G-Fonk'' currently being caned on Radio one by Chris Moyles amongst other grass-root DJs UK-wide, this deck-struous duo finally look set to make their own name, instead of hyping other people's!!!!! Their time, it seems, has finally come. Skeewiff are about to land. But with a pedigree of collaborations as pure bred and 'owd skwoool' as theirs - try Schooly D, Young MC, Clyde Stubblefield (the original funky drummer), and Trouble Funk for size - you could say they were always bound to break into the big-time, it was just a matter of time. After all, if anybody can spot fresh talent, it's the musicians themselves. So check this exclusive interview, and count yourselves lucky to be ahead of the masses, soon they'll be over-run with journo's and they'll either hit over exposure or they'll be forced to turn interviews down left, right and centre.
Meanwhile, look out for the single 'G-Fonk' 'cos it's guaranteed to be a dancefloor monster and it's released to an impatient public in February. There's also an album in the offing that's 'designed to turn your stereo into jelly'! A veritable musical tour de force, it takes in a welter of musical styles - funk, hip-hop, big-beat - all in a bouncy, up-for-it styleeee. And it's title? 'Its All Goneà' -you've guessed it- Skeewiff!!!! Expect this little aural gem late this year. If you live in Japan, The US or Ibiza make sure to catch their live show - it includes some masterful scratching by DJ Dexter, beefy live bass, sweet lead guitar and their very own funky drummer - live and very much in yer face. The whole gig's a sure-fire blast. So, that's Skeewiff' for you, most definitely one to watch out for in '99 and beyond! Not bad for a couple of toking Draft dodgers, eh?
